Just a general question here. I need a new transmission, and have a '96 850 tranny. Would it fit into my '98 S70?

Yes it will.

I hate doing this, but I do have a 98 s70 tranny sitting in my garage. We pulled it out to do a manual swap.

It is basically the same transmission. If it has a lot of miles on it, I would consider calling to Matty Moo about his S70 transmission.
