S80 integrated on board phone not working

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 integrated on board phone not working

Post by craftychap »

Just bought my first Volvo - and what a car! 2002 S80 T6. 2.9 petrol twin turbo.

Had everything checked and serviced and all is fine apart from the on-board phone. The sim card holder is under the keypad on the centre console and I have tried all UK networks. All i am getting, when I switch on the phone power, is a beep if I hit any other key! I don't believe this to be a network problem.

The sim card holder can only take the sim one way, contacts face up, and the holder seems okay. No details or instructions are displayed on the dash. No warning or errors, no networ mesages, nothing!

With or without a simcard inserted, the pressing of any of the dial buttons emits a beep when powered on. There are no beeps when I press the red or green buttons on the sterring wheel, but neither does it encourage the phone to work!

The simcard holder seems to be okay, but there is a metal strip down just one side, is this usual?

Had a chance to remove the HU801 this weekend to check connections and everything is exactly as it should be, soooooooooo......dilemna.....where next?

Have now ruled out power supply, connections, sims, sim holder and networks.

I still have no display for the telephone coming onto the dash.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have again tried numerous simcards from various networks and always same, just the single beep whenever a key is pressed, No beep when send or end is pressed on the steering, but no display either!

I can phone the car number but cannot answer or end the call! I can hear phone ringing perfectly but try to answer on key pad just emits beep, still no display and no answer or ending using controls on steering wheel.

I guess there wouldn't be any DTC code for such an option?
I guess you are avoiding a dealer?

Definitely avoiding a dealer!

I have read that this could be related to 3g simcards compared to 2g simcards. I can state that a 3g only sim such as used by the Uk 3 network will not work, but all others have 2 and 3g capability, so this should not be the problem.

I inserted a 2g only 5 year old VodafoneUK simcard in the car today and the contacts are clearly very different to modern ones, but I still had the same response.

I was able to call the car and hear it ringing, but was unable to recieve/end the call using the send/end buttons on the console as they just 'beeped' when pressed. Pressing the send/end buttons on the steering wheel did not answer/end the call but there was no beeping either.

I think you are not getting a lot of response due to the US market not getting the phone in cars. US/Canada got an emergency response system with phone capability but it did not use SIM. In US the phones get at least software shut down and some times get physically removed from dash.

Thanks jimmy57. I was under the illusion that the US market had the phones with a large simcard which went into the top of the trunk!
I have now tried an electric reset. Removes negative lead from battery for 30 mins, open door, key to position 2, reconnect lead to battery whilst leaving driver door open, but still no response! Everything is the same.

Ran diagnostics via indicator stem and fog lights and all seems to have clear or set except "PHM not checked"! Could this be Phone Module?

Yes, PHM is the phone module. "not checked" means it has no codes currently but its diagnostics have not completed. IF you attempt a call and attempt to receive a call and try the code presence access again without turning ignition off you may see "DTCs in PHM" come up.

Sorry Jimmy57, do you mean I go into diagnostic mode again and then phone the car phone? If I see the reading "DTC's in PHM" come up, do I need to do anything?
