Transmission Shift Problem

Post by randal »

2002
V70-XC, AWD
2.4L
191,000 miles

My first Volvo. I purchased this car at the beginning of winter as a 'snow' car. It has run well. I've replaced the right, rear-wheel bearing so far. The all-motor belt just shreaded; I'll try to replace that myself. Anything I should know first?

Now there is a noticeable (I feel a slight movement and hear the dull sound clearly) thud, when I shift from Park to Drive. This occurs a few seconds after the actual shift. Then, as I drive off I hear a soft metal sound (one clink) as it shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. This is the only time I hear it, after the original take-off.

Is this an indication that the transmission is about to give me major problems?

thanks,

motor/trans mounts with a driveshaft spline clink for dessert.
The driveshaft at hub fit is not tight and the motion turns into a "CLINK" in time. There is a loc tite product that takes care of it. DO NOT use a Loctite brand locking compound, many headaches for repairs if the shaft is glued in....

Check tensioner and fixed rollers for belt. Belts fail but worn rollers can encourage it to run off center or run off edge of roller.
Tensioner wear that lets the arm run crooked is also some thing to check.
