what years had questionable ETMs?

Post by carboncow »

Sorry for a rehash of a common topic but the posts I had book marked on many topics didn't give me a "for sure" answer.

Our 2001 T5 had a bad one and then a bad replacement...now the wife found a 2006 Ocean Edition she wants with about 100K miles. I know we can look for the sticker of a replacement ETM but I'm curious if there was a year they went to a different solution. I seem to recall the replacements have the same failure point so that tells me Volvo never started putting a better design in.

Did they replace them with the newer body designs at all?

'99-'02 were the bad years.(Magnetti Marelli units)

I believe starting with '03 they came with a better design, not the potentiometer design of the early years.

Everything I've read about ETMs indicates that the replacement units that Volvo fitted (and is fitting) has the same part number (and design) as older units.

No redesign was embarked upon or was compatible with the ECUs (apart from XeModex's units which are aftermarket)

My 07 S60 has a completely different ETM that is not a Magnetti Marelli unit and does not use potentiometer film :)

This is correct. What stinks is that even the replacement unit has a chance of failing. They did not redesign it or anything.

99-01
The only 02s were a VERY small minority of S70 and V70 NON turbos early months into production.
(Probably all done by Dec 2001

All Non-Turbo '02 have the bad ETM. Mine is a late '02 build (June '02?) and has the bad design. replaced once at ~70K miles. Now has ~140K miles and is still fine.

I was told a few but now you've proven otherwise, but in 2002 it is JUST the non turbos, that I DO know!

Well, time to eat crow or mud!!!
Apparantly ALL 02 C70s came with the "bad" Marelli-Magnetti ETMs!
(I just found this out today as Volvo replaced (under warranty) the slightly glitching ETM out of my daughter's 02 C70 with 95K miles!
