Bent Rims-Help

Post by talbotpj »

I recently hit a pot hole so big that it bent my two RH side rims. The tires immediately lost air. The tire store was able to straighten them so that the tires would keep air, but they still leak pretty quickly. They recommended I replace them.

The problem is I don't know where to find new ones. The tire store doesn't sell them and tirerack.com doesn't seem to have 15" steelies in stock. The tire size is 195/60/R15. It would be great to find a local retailer to avoid shipping costs as I am tight on money, but I can't seem to locate any.

Thanks in advance,

Pat

look in local junkyards and online. That would be your best bet. Some tire places now have a machine that will straighten bent rims back to round, but is sounds like the place you took yours to did not. They most likely just hammered them back into somewhat of shape.

Wheels off a 1996-1999 Ford Taurus (and possibly later variants, too) are the exact same bolt pattern.

they are about $100 each from the dealership, but check car-part.com for junkyards near you.

Check craigslist - auto parts - type volvo into the search. Try other nearby areas if you can't find any in your local listings.

Plan B would be to pick up a used set of Cetus alloy wheels. I upgraded my son's car from steelies with two hub caps missing to a used set of Cetus wheels for around $100 + freight. It did improve the look of the car and it was cheap enough. Cetus wheel are very common, more common that the steel wheels, so they can actually be cheaper than steel wheels.

You will need to pay to swap the tires and get them balanced but you would need to do that anyway.

OK, thanks for all the help.

I've tracked down a set of rims with tires mounted on Craigslist off a '93 Volvo 960. They are 15" rims, but the tires are 195/65R15. The tires I currently have on my '98 S70 are 195/60R15. Would the new ones fit being they are slightly different in size?

Thanks again,

Pat

Go look at Erie vo-vo. Lots and lots of wheels, including alloys for the price of steelies.
