MAF Sensor

I am trying to replace my MAF sensor. I am pretty ignorant as I do not work on my car often, but my financial situation makes it necessary. I bought a used MAF sensor and I believe I was sent the wrong one. The MAF sensor is located at the air filter housing, is it not? If it is, then I was definitely sent the wrong one. If it isn't at the air cleaner, where is it? I find the Haynes manual I have a bit confusing so it is not much help. Thank you.

The MAF is indeed right after the airbox. They do vary depending on whether your car is a turbo or a non turbo.

What is the part that you bought, and your year/model?

Thank you. Looks different than mine. Still, I am confident that I got the wrong one. Must be for a turbo or a different year. Should have checked the part number before I bought it.
Thank you both for your help. I should have thought about a forum like this before. There is more that needs to be done to my car, but no money for it at the moment. My car has 294,000 miles BTW. No complaints and I am grateful every time it gets me to work and back. I don't ask it to do much more than that.

What year and model number is your Volvo? I guess from your previous comment, that you have a non-turbo engine???

I just changed the MAF sensor on my 97 850. Its a piece of cake, two torx screws an electrical connector and a worm clamp and its off. I bought mine on ebay for about $60.00 brand new and it works fine. Whats leading you to change the maf sensor? There are several things it can be also. What year is the car?

My car has been stalling for a while. The check engine light has been on for years. My car has a lot of miles and I am very broke. Being broke makes you do dumb things. I have been holding off at spending any kind of money for a long time. I do not drive far and only when necessary.
I have an OBDII reader that I bought on eBay a long time ago so I could turn off the check engine light to get it smoged. That is all I ever used it for. Cost me about $25.00 and it reads my car where a mechanics $10,000.00 version may not. I finally decided to use it and take a closer look. It indicated the MAF was bad. Once I found out what a MAF was I ordered one. The wrong one was sent. Yes, I have a non-turbo car. Finally got the correct one. Also bought it on eBay. After market part, new, $54.00 and free shipping. Installed it. Very easy. Car runs better so far, but I haven't driven far. Check engine light is out. I am hopeful.

Ha! Its no secret. I used the advice of another forum member... I used two cans of engine cleaner (Auto Advance brand), then sprayed it down with the engine running. Turn the engine off. I next used a 50/50 solution of water and original Armor All to soak the entire engine bay. Wipe it down with shop towels (this takes a couple of hours, lots of shop towels and a few beers.) I used extra cleaner on a few parts to get crud off. Its a work in progress. Thank you for saying it looks nice.
