Volvo Repair Database 1999 S80 T6

Post by paulluman »

I have recently purchased the above vehicle. I purchased the Carfax report and it has been maintained primarily by Volvo dealerships. It has 165,000 miles. It has been inspected by the local Volvo dealership, and two local shops. I have replaced all rotors, plugs, ignition coils, engine/cabin air filters, fuel filter, all flushes.

I know when doing performance upgrades the weakest link fails.

I "assume" I am at Stage 0.

What would be the best progression for an "Upgrade" schedule?

Well, you might want to continue to search about T6s
They all have a VERY weak transmission, if it's OK now, thank your lucky stars.

If you can find any HP upgrades take that into mind as more torque will probably blow the tranny to smithereens!
(It's essentially a GM, Chevy Cobalt transmission, designed for small low torque 4 cyls and LOW HP V6s).

T6 S80 is really peppy in stock form, especially compared to most of the other offerings from Volvo over the years. My parents have one, I test drove, purchased, delivered it for them, and have driven it a few times since while visiting them. I'll echo what JRL said; be happy with your tune up, and say a little prayer for your transmission every time you put it into drive.

Volvo used a version of the GM 4T65-E trans in the S80 T6, the 4T65-E is the same transmission in the late '90s early '00s Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevy Lumina, Monte carol, Buick Aurora, etc. I had a '94 3.1L Grand Prix, with the older 4T60-E and it was as reliable as a hammer, I put dang near 300K miles on it's transmission, but went through 2 engines. I don't know what Volvo did to the trans, or if it simply can't handle the T6's power, the failure rate has puzzled me ever since I started researching my parent's S80.

On a side note, in today's edition of: Random Thoughts by Lee, There's a 4T65E-HD that's a common swap into a lot of the previous mentioned GM cars, that have been "built/upgraded/tuned." The 4T65E-HD is a "heavy duty" version of the 4T65-E that came stock attached to the Super Charged 3.8L (L67) in the Grand Prix GTP, Bonneville, Buick Riviera, SS Impala, SS Monte Carlo, etc. That L67 can make some insane torque and HP numbers, and the 4T65E-HD handles it. I've often wondered what it would take to get the 4T65E-HD swapped in place of the Volvo/GM 4T60E. Maybe swap the Volvo/GM 4T60E's guts for the 4T65E-HD's guts... I don't know what the Swedes did to the trans when they got their hands on it, so any ease/difficulty to such a procedure would be pure speculation on my part. I believe just about everything but the cup holders are computer controlled on these things though.

The car was assembled in Sweden then shipped to a stateside dealer. The transmission was replaced in 2002.

Please give me some advice on a systematic, slow upgrade schedule,

I personally love this car ... and will do what is necessary to return it to not only return it to its former glory, but, much, much better.

I personally have replaced 4 (four) T6 trannies on cars with less mileage, 2 XC90s and 2 S80s
More blow on the XC90 because of the heavier weight but that will be negated by adding HP to an S80
Yours seems to be fine for now, please don't push your luck which could be to the tune of $4000!

Do your research.
These cars were designed and came with BAD trannies

You'll be hard pressed to find much if any after market support for the S80, for the same reasons you've already been told. If you are dead set on a performance Volvo, get almost any other platform, or figure out how to keep the transmission alive, and teach the rest of us something.

If you thought JRL was being a smartass, you couldn't handle any of the other forums I frequent. This place has the largest group of helpful, friendly, willing to share their knowledge at no expenses group of folks I've seen on any of the interwebs.

My apologies.

Is it possible to beef up the trans or if it "goes", replace with a sturdier one that can handle HP upgrades?

I suppose any transmission can be made stronger and I also would guess these can be too.
Level 5 in Ga (I believe) can build anything but they're not cheap.
A simple shift kit won't build any strength into it but if you start looking through the street rod magazines there are several companies that "build" GM trannies.

In the future, when this one departs its mortal life, I plan on getting another one; I Love this car! What is your recommendation on a used S80, any year, including the present one?
