Erratic shifting

Post by VolvoFreak »

Doesn't happen all the time, in fact, it's uncommon, but every so often in my '93 GLT my tranny shifts "funny". For instance, last time it happened, I was going down a long hill and it shifted out of overdrive like it was engine braking. Another time I was in the city and it seemed to slip between 3rd and overdrive a touch - thats happened 2 or 3 times. Also, a couple of times while going up hill, it shifted out of overdrive like it should have, but didn't shift back in even if I took my foot of the gas. No codes are shown and fluid looks and smells perfectly fine.

Fluid level checked? Remember to check while car is idling, warm, on level surface.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

According to my mechanic, the fluid level and quality was fine (I should check myself though). Actually, the tranny was power flushed about 5k miles ago...

"...I was going down a long hill and it shifted out of overdrive like it was engine braking."

I've always considered that normal (by design).

It very well may be normal operation.. The only other Volvo I've ever owned was an '88 240dl. That's one reason I posted, to see if it was normal. I mean, as far as front-wheel drive vehicles, the only one's I've owned were an '84 Pontiac Sunbird and '86 Olds Delta 88 which never did that. Everything else have been rear-wheel drives and I've only had my 850 for about 4 months.
