timing mark location
I did a timing belt replacement on our 2002 XC70 today. I marked the cam and crank locations with a dot of paint before disassembly. I found the timing marks for the cams but could not find the factory marks for the crank. Where is it?

Well, I must be a tooth off, because I got a "check engine" light. I checked the above link, and the timing marks shown are different than an 02 XC70. The front of my engine has what appears to be a timing tab but it is not marked. Does not appear to be any markings on the belt sprocket or the front pulley. Guess I'll have to manualy check top dead center and go from there. Going to have to go back in so if a picture would help I"ll try to post one.

Do you have the crank outer pulley off yet! If you look at the pulley/ sprocket for the timing belt you'll see it better there! Remove the drive belt portion of the crank pulley..
When I did my timing belt job about 3 hears ago, I didn't remove the pulley... just worked the belt around the pulley like someone suggested and it worked fine.
Do I need to remove the large center crank bolt to remove the pulley... or just the 4 small bolts.
Thanks

I found that if I lined up the cam marks then rotated the engine a little clockwise so the marks on the cam gears are almost straight up, two small "V" notches on the end of the crank gear near the block will be in view. There is a tab on the front of the engine with a very small bump on the end of the tab. Rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise and line up the bump between the two Vs. They are a little hard to see unless you have good light.

They are more than "a little hard" to see! Extremely hard, I would say. But they are there. As Ozark Lee pointed out, Volvo used two different positions of marks. One has a mark on each of two peaks pointing to the valley between them. The valley is what you want to align with the line on the engine block. The other has a v-notch on the block edge of the valley of the sprocket. It really is very hard to see. Try cleaning it gently with a wire brush or even cue tip on a stick (that helped in my case).
If you haven't yet removed your old timing belt, and IF you can see the timing marks on your camshaft sprockets, just align the camshaft sprockets with the respective notches on the timing belt top cover and your crankshaft should be aligned properly. Then look real hard with a bright flashlight and eventually you will see the mark on the crank sprocket. If you don't move anything, the crank should be properly aligned.
The first time I did this, I removed the accessory belt (outer) pulley and was glad I did because it was a lot easier to find that mark. O'Reilly and Autozone stores might have the pulley puller, but you'll need to get the big nut loose to get it off.
Good luck.

What is the secret to get the big nut loose? I have not read of any options to lock the crank... The Audi has this feature... remove a bolt and insert another bolt that contains a locking pin that holds the crank at TDC.
Thanks
