Loud metallic rubbing noise

I have a 2002 XC70, 120k miles. I recently changed the pads and rotors in the front. Previous to changing the brakes there was a slight rubbing noise that presumably came from the front. After changing the brakes, there is a NOTICEABLE rubbing noise coming from the car. The rubbing noise coincides with the rotation of the wheels, is not affected by braking and gets louder as I turn left, and goes away when I turn right. The noise is not constant either, it comes and goes. At first I thought it was a bent dust shield rubbing on the rotor, but I have removed the wheels twice and cannot find anything. There are not any rub marks anywhere, I checked the clearance of the dust shield, and everything looks perfect. I have checked, but not taken apart the rear brakes, could that be it? The noise is driving me insane!! Thoughts?

I had a similar experience with the xc that we bought a couple months back. Same thing only when I turned one way. Then it just started going non stop. I jacked up the car and realized the sound wasn't coming from the wheels. It ended up that the exhaust heat shield in the center tunnel had pulled thru the bolts and was laying on the axle. My guess is one side broke away first and was intermittently hitting the axle till the other side fell off too.

...and if it happens only in wet weather, google "volvo rain squeal".
