2002 xc70 ETM on the way out?

Post by Wammer »

I know the Volvo "recall" was through 2001 for the xc70 and mine is a 2002, but after looking around to see if other people had similar issues w/stalling at speed, it sounds like it might be my ETM and/or MAF. Last summer, hot day (90-95F) fully loaded car at 70mph w/AC on... the car bucked as though I hit something, all lights, gauges, fan, etc. went off, then started back up again and seemed fine for the rest of the 200 mile trip. Didn't happen again for a long time. This summer (couple weeks ago) at highway speed the car did a less severe repeat - felt as though I hit something, but I don't think the power went out for as long. W/the cruise control on, it feels as though the car kind of surges, rather than holding a speed smoothly. Any ideas?

Your car doesn't have an ETM. Your symptoms sound like you have a network issue that takes down the communication or a power issue interrupting the power supply and making things "blink" off.
There should be codes in that car that a knowledgeable tech can use to know which one it is. The codes I'm talking about will not be seen by a code reader at an auto parts store. It will take VIDA or an equivalent if it exists, to see the codes.
