99 c70 cigarette lighter fuse keeps blowing s/p ETM swap

Post by JsinnC70 »

Functioning fine before I dropped it off to get the ETM replaced. I noticed it was blown when I got it back, changed fuse, blew again. I put a larger fuse in and it blew again. I tried an even larger fuse, blew again. I wouldnt even had made the connection to the ETM replacement except I read someone else had a similar problem (I cant find that post again). Does anyone have an idea what would be causing this?

First of all - It's NOT a good idea to upsize fuses. Ever.
You can cause serious and expensive damage or even fire.

Have you inspected the cigarette lighter?
Look closely at the center contact and be sure it's
not deformed and contacting the edges of the socket.
Anything in there? some metal? A coin?

Beyond that, what does the shop say?

Yes, I made sure it wasnt anything like that. The dealer doesnt have a clue, and wants me to bring my car in, I wont. This sucks, as I use the hell outta my radar detector. Ill probably end up rewiring the thing but im trying to avoid that.

If the dealer messed things up, and the trip is on their dime, why not let'em fix it?
And why would you "rewire" it instead of finding the problem and making it right?
Just curious.

Chalk it up to several bad fuses. I went and got new fuses and it works brilliantly.

I was going to rewire it because i have to wire a couple of custom interior lights anyways.

Thanks for the input though!
