86 740 hit bump = loss of power

Post by e777 »

Hello,

My 86 740 NT wagon has been doing something odd lately. I'll be driving at about 35mph and then occasionally, when I hid a bump in the road, I feel a sudden loss of power at which time I have observed the tach to suddenly drop to 0 before jumping right back to normal. The car has all new-ish ignition components, with the exception of the coil. Could this be ECU related?

Thanks,

Eric

Check the condition of the red wires connecting to the positive battery terminal.

Check the power stage (coil signal amplifier) connector on left fender behind and below the back of left headlamp.

Thanks, jimmy 57. I checked the power stage and it was secure (although I probably should clean the connectors). What I did find, as our colleague suggested, was that the two bolts holding the positive battery cable to the connector clamp were quite loose. I tightened them and will see what happens. Thanks again to the both of you!
