S80 T6 - Complete coolant loss

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 T6 - Complete coolant loss

Post by Schuits »

Just thought I'd share this incident and maybe someone has an idea what happened.

A week or 2 ago I got a 'low coolant' warning. So I topped up the expansion bottle and carried on driving.
This morning I got the same warning and noticed steam coming from under by bonnet. Once stopped I opened the hood and noticed at least 2 places where cooland was leaking from the connection between pipes. The only thing I can think of is that some kind of overpressure caused the problem?!

The coolant was completely empty. So I filled it up and limped to work, but not before the resevoir was empty again.
The car has now been towed to the service centre.

I'm not sure if its related at all, but I've had a slow oil leak on a cam (?) that the service guys have failed 5 times (!!!) to fix. I suggested this time they clean the oil trap. Could an overpressure caused by a fouled up oil trap cause the cooling system to blow?

Incidentally I also have a P1132 error. I replaced both front oxygen sensors with new Bosch ones, but the light came back on the next day :(

Cheers,
Schuits

I just got a call from the shop. It turns out it was the heater radiator.
They're going to have to remove the complete dashboard to fit a new one.
Also my turbo control value was on its way out.

This car has cost me a fortune on repairs.....

I dont know how cold it gets in SA, but if you can live with it, you could just bypass the heater core.
The TCV is trivial to replace, disconnect three hoses and an electrical connector, reconnect and you are done.

Actually I considered that. It does get cold sometimes...but not $900 worth of cold, hehe.
I'll give the shop a call and see if they've started the job yet and try work something out. Thanks for the tip.

Just a quick update.

I was too late in asking them not to replace the heater, but just bypass it. So I had to fork out.
I got the vehicle back yesterday. The auto-dimming mirror was porked, having the lava-lamp look. The mechanic says 'it was like that'.
Also one of the instrument cluster lights isn't working, so I guess they broke that up when removing the dash.
Finally the engine service light came on today. I think their solution for these warnings is just to reset them and claim its fixed

The code is P1132, which is I believe for the front o2 sensors. I had replaced these myself, but the warning light came back on. So I need to find a vacuum hose diagram and start looking for a vacuum leak....
