S60 Vin decode and options

Post by Xcellr8 »

I know ALOT about cars, but I am not clear on the configuration of my daughter's 2001 S60. I am trying to help her with maintenance and repairs over the phone and internet as she is FL and I am IL. I can't fully figure out what she bought, and she doesn't know what to tell me to help identify, for example, which transmission, RWD, FWD, AWD, suspension, Nivomat, etc.

The VIN is YV1RS58D412064497, so it appears she has code 58, which is B5244T3. But what does that mean? She thinks she has a 2.4Turbo with automatic transmission and front wheel drive. But, I've seen VIN decoder information that states B5244T3 is AWD all wheel drive, without specifying the engine. So what engine, transmission and drive does she have?

Then, when getting new tires, the shop told her she needed new struts. She thinks struts all the way around. It appears to me that the S60 has shocks in the back and struts up front. But, when looking for replacements, there is a distinction between NIVOMAT (electronic?) suspension. How can she tell if she has electronic suspension?

I can't believe I have to ask these questions, but I have never seen the car.

S60
2001
Engine B5244T3
Trans AW55-50/51SN

According to the VIN info given this is a run-of-the-mill S60, FWD with a 2.4T engine and autotrans. As the owner of a 2001 V70 I can tell you the transmissions 01-02 tended to be garbage with the netural/stop issue as well as having the bogus ETMs (see this link: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... m.php?f=12). If her tranny is running well and the ETM was replaced at some point it may have some good life in it, maybe.

Knowing the miles would help tell you what she is in for.

Most likely she is due for struts, I found both our X70 and V70 to be a bit in need of suspension work for the mileage then other cars I've owned with similar miles/age (Vw, Saab, Porsche, BMW).

I have the exact same car. Actually I have two but one is a run of tyhe mill 2001 S60 with a 2.4T and FWD.

I'm rather happy with mine. I'm fortunate, I've had no transmission problems.

The prior owner replaced the turbo. I had some socket short in the turn signal I fixed. I replaced the alternator, the steering rack and the rear sway bar links. The worst was the steering rack. The rest was almost trivial.

There are some silly common weakness in this model/year: Gas door hinge always breaks ($10 fix). Cup holder cover always breaks (dont bother fixing).

I haven't needed struts yet
