tranny slipping.
.My 2001 S40 has tranny problems. Slipping. Now, I will do a drain and flush this holiday. BUT...let's say that it needs to be explored, or replaced. I have a Volvo dealership right down the block from me...and I have a pvt mechanic (not a tranny expert), and myself. What are my options? I fear that Volvo will take my first born...the local tranny shop is an unknown...my mechanic would do a swap, not fix. OK...file in.... oh, yeah...Long Island, New York

Assume you can't get it to stop slipping, but I would at least talk to a Volvo mechanic to get a sense of whether there's anything minor that can be done to repair a slipping transmission. If the answer is no, then if you want to keep the car, you'll need to get another tranny installed, or have the existing one rebuilt.
If I had a shop willing to allow me to work there with the mechanic and I could source a used tranny with say 30 day refund option, I'd probably go for the private mechanic. The arrangement I would try for is: let me get it ready to pull. Then we use your equipment—tranny jack, chain hoist, etc.—and you help me pull it. Such a deal would likely require the shop owner to be paid for use of his tools and space. If he needs a grand to do the work with your help, then:
I'd check around for a reputable private tranny rebuilder and get a quote on a rebuild. Assume the shop would need to pull the tranny and all that's entailed in that.
Too expensive? Do you have AAA tow insurance? A space to work on it outside? Still mild in Long Island? Pull it all apart except for dropping the unit out. Have it towed to the transmission rebuilder. They can then drop it out, fix it, pop it back in and you put it back together.
