1996 850: Driver Seat Belt Stuck

I jumped in my car on the way to work yesterday and the seat belt and it wouldn't budge. I got home later to mess with it. I took the cover off and spent about 20 minutes slowly working back and forth until I was able to fully get it retracted. I slowly fed the belt back in since the belt was all over the place, thinking that would fix it. It still refuses to come out like normal.

Is there something I can look at (like a release button) to fix it or will this result in a replacement?

Unfortunately there is no release button. What happens is that the lubricant on the lock pawls dries out and they stick in place. I have managed to get a couple of mine to release by pulling upward, towards the headliner. It will take some time but once it is released shoot some spray oil at the base of the spool and try to work it into the belt lock that is just below the spool.

What ever you do DO NOT unplug the electrical trigger wires without first removing a battery cable or you will set an SRS code and it will require a trip to the stealership to get it reset.

Thanks Lee! When you say spray oil...like WD40 or something else?
