99 s80 non-turbo re-timing the timing belt

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

99 s80 non-turbo re-timing the timing belt

Post by gds »

Hello,

question regarding a timing belt that has slipped a tooth...i'm replacing it but was a little unclear on the procedure for getting it all lined up and was hoping someone might help out. I would like to understand somewhat the operation of the cvvt so i can be confident in what i am doing, or lining up. (i have the accessories off because i am also changing the pcv..i also have the cam locking tool) So far, this is my plan:

1. line up the marks on the engine/cams as close as possible (i'm off a tooth here)
2. lock the crank in place with the pin for the starter
3. remove the timing belt/tensioner and then lock the cams in place with the tool. (i'm a little fuzzy on this one..if the cams are out of time, it is possible to just lock them to the tool?)
4. loosen the center torx bolt on the intake cvvt unit. also loosen the three little bolts in the slotted holes.

at this point, the manual goes through some tightening/loosening/rotating steps and looses me. The point here is to get the cvvt unit oriented properly and then tighten it all up? What is the purpose of those slotted holes/bolts? The manual says nothing about re-tightening them.
thanks
gary
