Turbo oil leak, but not the return line

Post by myzomela »

1998 S40 2.0T, 145,000km, manual transmission, RHD.

I'm looking for ideas about an oil leak on or near my turbocharger. The obvious thing to try was the gasket and seal on the oil return line. I replaced these over the weekend, and the return line is now bone dry - but I still have a leak. A drip is forming on one of the coolant lines, like this:

The obvious thing to look for next is the oil supply line, but searching forums doesn't suggest that this is a common failure point. So I have two questions:

1) Any other thoughts on where the oil may be coming from? The camshaft seals are dry.

2) Does the arrow marked "A" point to the oil supply line? (Ran out of time to investigate here over the weekend just past.)

Thanks for any ideas!

(BTW, first post here. I usually hang around on the volvoxc forum, but glad to have found this one when dealing with my S40. And I'm doubly glad this problem isn't on my XC, with the bevel gear in the way.)

Well with a bit more light and a bit more time, it turns out the exhaust camshaft seal is leaking. Not the turbo after all.

I also suspect there's a PCV service in my horoscope. With the rubber-glove-on-the-dipstick test, the rubber went neither up nor down.

So what is the With the rubber-glove-on-the-dipstick test?
Thanks

If you hold a piece of a rubber glove firmly over the dipstick, or oil filler hole, and your PCV system is clogged up, the rubber will start to blow up like a balloon. If the PCV system is in good shape, the rubber will get sucked slightly into the hole.

I picked this tip up from the man behind http://howardsvolvos.webs.com/. The PCV system is really little different between the S40/V40 and the P2s.
