Another 1997 850R stuck in Winter Mode

Post by poweredbyfuel »

I bought a 1997 850R in 2005 but due to illness did not put it back together until this week. This vehicle was purchased from my Step Dad and he thought the Turbo was out and removed it but never put it back together. He told me that the car lacked power and he pulled the Turbo to replace it. He also stated that the Car was stuck in winter mode. I cleaned the Turbo up and re-installed it and found that one of the charge tubes on top of the inter-cooler had a big hole and replace all of the charge tubes. I drove the car and it ran well with no Arrow on the dash. After my initial test drive the Arrow illuminated on the dash and was blinking. I followed the instructions on pulling the PNP Switch and cleaned and re-installed but still have the same problem... The car will start in Park and Neutral and Reverse lights work as well... The Economy and Sport light blink when the console switch is in the corresponding position. When I Press the rocker switch to Economy then hit the Winter Button the Sport LED(yellow) will light(blink) while the Winter button is down and the Economy LED(green) will light(blink) when Winter Button is Released... The PNP looked to be in good shape but I cleaned and greased hoping that it would be the magic fix but still have the same symptom... I also checked the Tranny fluid cold and hot and the level, color and smell is all good... The car also has the Check Engine light lit and I hooked up my ODBII scanner and found no active or pending codes... I also pulled the Console Switch and Checked it out and it all looks good. The car has 129k miles and other than the Red(Oxide) paint appears to be in great shape. The Engine's Tach say's 1000 rpm but my scanner say's 800-850 rpm at idle. Sorry for the novel but this is my first rodeo with a Volvo...

I'm thinking that there's a relay somewhere and I can't find a wiring schematic. My other theory is that it's in the TCM, does anyone have any information that might help me?

Thanks'

Spent the morning pulling radio, center console and other interior panels to remove old Nokia car phone and all supporting wiring. After I put it all back together my blinking arrow disappeared and everything appeared to be normal and went back out for a test drive and upon my return the blinking arrow was back... I tried to duplicate gear shift position, parking brake and cycle the ignition to see if I could get it to reset but couldn't find the combination if there is one...

Still need some help on this one if anyone has any ideas please let me know...

I poked around the relays under the Fuse panel cover and seem to get a response on the blinking arrow but can't seem to duplicate it. At this point believe that all I'm doing is interrupting power or ground to something that may reset the light...

The other issue? that I have which may or may not be related is that the Serv-ice Light is lit and stay's lit for 120 seconds after the car is started then goes out and the Check Engine light comes on 9 seconds after the car is started and stay's on. I've scanned the ODBII port and have No active or pending codes and not all on-board readiness test are complete. The car is not licensed or insured so I grounded to the subdivision for test drives...

You need to get transmission codes read out. On that year model it takes a Volvo Scan Tool or other brand complete diagnostic scanner. The check engine light is on due to request from TCM (trans control module). Many generic scan tools do not recognize the TCM to ECM commanded check engine light.

You'll need the codes to check of course, but I'd suspect a possible throttle position sensor failure there.

There is another sensor under the shifter called a PRNDL sensor (different from PNP).

Put in New TPS and has same problem. ran ohm test on wiring specifically pin 18 and 43 for PCM. Vehicle wiring checked out okay but PCM is 1.7k resistance. Put PCM in freezer and rechecked, reads zero when frozen and car is fine until PCM warms up...

Ordered a used PCM should be here today or tomorrow...
