850 SAS (Air Pump) Delete Modification

Post by Peppuz » Sun Mar 25, 2012 8:41 am

I've been reading the ECU modification over on Volvospeed fix the CEL issues with the air pump. Just noticed that they introduce the topic mentioning the 1997 850. I have '96 850. Before I start messing with the ECU, just wanted to be sure this modification would also apply to the 1996 850 SAS system.
Thanks

Yes.

On any 96 850 with an air pump, the "SAS delete" standard procedure will work. I used the Volvospeed writeup to do it on mine.

I've done it on mine, over a week with with no CEL. Nothing removed, just disconnected the air pump wiring harness in front of the radiator. If someone sold me the car right now, I wouldn't even know the mod was done.

Follow-up post. No more SAS check engine lights. No engine problems whatsoever. Best mod I have ever done to any car I have owned :!:

Can anyone verify the procedure is the same on a 98 V70? I am going to do this tonight on my wifes 96 850, and if the procedure is the same for my car, will do mine this weekend.

Both my wife's 96 850 and my 98 V70 T5 have had this modification. No CEL, although the readiness cycles have yet to complete. But, took the 96 thru DEQ today, and asked if he could do an exhaust test instead of the usual OBDII and he agreed and it passed. I think for many cars if the drive cycles aren't complete, they won't pass a 96 or newer car with OBDII, but a Volvo they will. I am removing the SAS pumps from both my Volvos, never to worry about them again!
