S40 difficult to engage 1st

Hi

I am having difficulty engaging 1st gear on a 1997 2.0 S40. It is however easier if I slightly pull up the reverse collar when engaging, but this is obviously not how it's supposed to be, and I almost backed into someone the other day too!!!

Any help/advice will be much appreciated.
