s70 readiness?

HI everyone! Great forum! New member here, owner of 98 s70 and 03 s60.
I have some issues with our 98 s70. It had a CEL, (p0172), vacuum leak. It sure was the elbow below the intake on the belt side. Replaced it, all is good, car runs fine. However, it's been 2 weeks and 1300 miles since CEL was cleared and i still dont have readiness on any parameters. State inspection coming in 2 weeks. I read somewhere that there is a sequence one can follow to obtain readiness. It requires about an hour of driving at certain speeds or something. I was wondering can it somehow be done by the volvo software? My brother is a vw technician and he uses vag-com to obtain readiness on vw's without driving. Can someone confirm that same thing can be done by volvo software? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

No; even dealers cannot reset the readiness codes on these cars. It has to complete a drive cycle.

That said, the S70 is exempt from up to 2 readiness monitors on emissions tests because they are so hard to reset. If it's still got 3 in, it can still pass testing in my state if they do an exhaust check and it passes.

I guess I am gonna have to do this driving sequence one night beacuse from what i read its impossible to do this during the day in populated areas. And with 1300+ miles since clearing the memory I just dont see it getting ready by itself...

EPA is aware of this and an experienced mechanic will know your issue and just ignore that part of the test (exempt). Please find vehicles with readiness issues on the last few pages of the attachment and Volvo is listed.

Not sure if you have a choice of where you bring it to for inspection as in CA but if you have a choice call them ahead and ask whether they are aware of the Readiness Issue.

Any luck with this as I am in the same boat. I re read over the EPA listing that somebody posted here and it appears to me that it says to treat the 96 through 98 Volvos as those with no problems or as normal vehicles. Therefore, it seems you wouldn't be able to get out of anything by bringing the EPA listing that was posted here to your test. I'm in Pennsylvania and I'm kind of stuck. I have about a month to get the readiness monitors set for the test. I talked to one of the inspectors and they said that they cannot perform a tailpipe test in the state for those vehicles and it has to be OBD II and it must comply. I've gone about 1100 miles now with no luck on any of the readiness monitors. Not sure what to do and I'm looking for someone who has been through similar problems that has actually gotten them to set. thank you so much for your help

Volvo has had issues where 2 indicators, I can't remember the two, will not pass.
When all don't pass it has a reason. Low voltage to ECM during cranking due to voltage drop on the pos cable between batt terminal and the electrical box in engine compartment is a common one to make this happen. The memory dumps every time you start if the V to the ECM falls too low.

It has been 20 years since I lived in a state with emission testing, Sorry to ask a stupid question.... Is it now practice to just read the ODBII port? NO tail pipe testing?

My 98 S70 NA w/ 211K miles on the clock has been driven over 5k miles since the last DTC appeared and only 2 of the monitors are ready. I have tried the step by step driving sequence twice and still not ready and my next smog test is due in sept.22. Bummer. I have replaced the evap.canister solenoid valve w/c was indeed not holding vac. I assumed that the air leak going into the intake manifold w/c would then be unmetered air, causes the system to run rich.
