ABS/TRACS lights came on... then went off?

Post by babelfish »

I know the deal -- ABS and TRACS lights are almost always an indicator that the ABS module is bad. Thanks to this forum, I didn't worry much when they turned on. (I once had transmission and ABS lights come on in my BMW. The alternator had died, as it turns out, and left me stranded. Sudden appearances of multiple dashboard lights leave me a bit worried oftentimes, as such.)

When I turned the car off and back on, though, they disappeared. They didn't come back on after that, in the approximately 20 minutes it took me to get home. And the speedometer worked the whole time.

I figure it's probably the ABS module anyway, but a quick Google search of the forums didn't show anything (maybe I was just using the wrong query), so I decided I'd post and double-check.

I should just be replacing my ABS module, right?

That's how it starts
Off and on, off and on, etc then finally it will just stay on.
This could take up to a year!
Time to replace

If its been replaced before, check your sensors. My S70 was doing exactly what you mention, so I turned my attention to the wheel sensors for the ABS (I knew that the module was fine).... Just get yourself an old toothbrush and some brake cleaner or carb cleaner and scrub away. This solved my issue and the light hasn't been back on for 250 miles.

Is that Justin with a new username?

I don't have any record of previous owners having replaced the ABS module, and the guy I bought the car from didn't mention it when I asked what he'd done in the last 30k miles or so, since his parents gave him the car, so I'm pretty sure it's the original.

Justin's brother. He got a new car and gifted me the Volvo for my 17th birthday.
You don't have to get a brand new abs, send it to Matty Moo and he can refurbish it for you.

A flaky electrical portion of the ignition switch can also cause erratic behavior with the ABS / Tracs lights but there is usually other strange things that start to happen along with the ABS / Tracs lights.

This might sound nuts, but check your tire pressure. My abs light went on and one front tire was down 10 or so pounds from the other side, matched the pressures side to side on all 4 and all has been fine for months.

I'm going through the same thing right now, but mine had (allegedly) been replaced/rebuilt by the last owner just over a year ago. It has stayed on consistently except the other day when I did the 9-3 wobble check on my passenger side wheel(car seems to pull when I brake). It shut off when I restarted the car after that just to turn back on a few minutes later. I'm thinking my problem with the sensor is down at the wheel somewhere, so i'll try cleaning it/check it better when the weather clears.

Haven't cleaned the sensor on the wheel yet, front drivers side, thought my caliper was bad, replaced the caliper, rotor and pads, bled out quite a bit of air/fluid....still getting a grinding noise on the same wheel, seems like the pedal wants to go way down, don't know much about the abs system, not a big fan,i don't have the abs light on,can maybe i disconnect the wire or fuse?this happened probably about 4 months ago, getting worse when i brake at regular speed and when going slow like into a parking lot....any ideas would be helpful.....thanks
