Advice needed on axle removal - 1998 V70 Auto

Hi new to this forum so forgive me if this is in the wrong section.
I am in the UK and have a 1998 V70 Automatic (right hand drive)and need to change the right side CV boots.
I'm confident I can do the job but having looked at the various tutorials unless I'm missing something or being a bit stupid, my question is, before removing the drive shaft do I need to drain any oil and if so what?
Many thanks in advance for any help.
Biggest problem we have in the UK because there are not enough of this model V70 on the road here there are no repair/workshop manuals in publication, the usual publishers did not think it economical to produce one.

No need to drain anything. You may get a tiny bit of transmission fluid when you pull the shaft from the transmission.

Try to grab a VADIS or even a Haynes manual from E-bay/Amazon, better than nothing. Also, look around about pulling the axle, one thing I think I saw was the use of a "special" tool, essentially something that looked a little like the end of a wrecking bar to help pop the axle out of the transmission without overly stretching the boots/joints.

, without your help(to be on the safe side)I would have drained the trans fluid .

Sure there are Petrol V70 manuals about but damned if I can find a diesel mine is a 1998 SE TDI Auto, which is why finding this website/forum has been a godsend.

The boots are what I have to change so the whole shaft has to come out.

Wish we could get the diesel here! My other daily drive is an old 85 Mercedes 300D Turbo, 30+ mpg all the time.

No need on the RH side. No circlip on that one.
Just remember to pull the pillow block,
( two 12 mm bolts ) and it'll slide right out.

Got the shaft out at last.
Everything went OK(as per the tutorial) until I got to pulling the shaft itself out, it came so far and then refused to come all the way. I cut the inner boot away cleaned all the grease off but could see no reason why it wouldn't budge, eventually put the drive in neutral turned, pulled, twisted, swore a lot then suddenly it popped out. It just seemed as if one of the lugs on the cv joint did not want to come out. Just hope I can get it back in a bit easier.

It should just pop in!

It will be prudent to replace the axle seals to stop fluid escaping and dirt getting in.

If you look at my avatar you can see my daily drive, with a half race 2.1 pinto engine(petrol) and 38 DGAS weber carbs I can if I'm lucky with the traffic coax 20mpg out of it
