Alright, here is another question. Does anyone know if API service SN-RC ILSAC GF-5 is suitable for the 1998 2.4L turbo? It does not match specs in the owners manual, but I suspect it’s changed in the last 20+ years.
The most modern oil should be backwards compatible for most engines produced since the mid 80s. From my understanding where problems arise is the lack of ZDDP needed for flat lifters. Also the better flow characteristics and better detergent cause problems with rope front and rear main seals on said engines. Neoprene replacements are available for those 40+ year old engines. Luckily none of that applies to your 1998 engine. The current standard should be backwards compatible to your car according to Mike. June

API has never introduced a category upgrade that was not backwards compatible, certainly for something as modern as an SG/SH engine from 1998. You can safely use any API service SN oil. And you can use SO when it comes out, etc.

Thank you June Zander Eric! I just found a full synthetic FVP brand at $2.66 per quart after rebate, so I’m going to get enough for a couple of changes. When I look this brand up I actually find a 5w40 European formula which I will see if they can get when I’m there. What they have on sale is dexos approved for GM. It should be good oil.

Don’t over think this but if you have a turbo and like boost, use a synthetic oil only to help prevent sludge.

That’s not inthe manual but from years of experience here.

I did run my T5 on Castrol Dino with 5k oil changes for its first 150k but we both had light feet, it was less than 10% sludged in the PCV when I did that job

Thanks abscate, the oil I found is a full synthetic which is normally 2.99 per quart but with the Menards rebate is 2.66 which is an exceptional price for full synthetic.

Filter too small for air box

Post by tmm657 » Sat Jan 18, 2020 9:43 pm

Recently purchased a 1998 v70 2.4 turbo had cleanable air filter that did not fit properly. I tried a wix paper filter and it was also slightly small for the box. Is there a chance there was a change during model years or has anyone run into this issue?

93-00, 850 and S/V/C70 all use the same air filter. Well C70 up to 04 even.

After markets often don’t quite fit right. Usually they are too big, though. I stick with Mann or Volvo stuff from FCZp, and pay once
