A really silly problem that created serious aggravation

One thing I wish was more user-friendly for DIY servicability is the headlight bulb replacements. My hands barely fit in the space to reach in and twist to unlock the bulbs. Installing them is even worse: I have to become a hand contortionist and use just two fingertips to push in, line up, push and twist.

Well, I had to replace a bulb and was going through all that. Couldn't get the bulb in and, after trying over and over, was on the verge of removing the whole headlamp assembly to gain access. I had to go to work, took my other car and left this one unfinished. I tried again at the end of the day but simply couldnt push the new bulb in far enough to allow it to engage the twist lock.

I was double-checking if I had the right bulb, everything. My hands were scuffed and sore.

Then I realized what happened:

The accordion shaped sealing O-ring from the old bulb stuck to the lamp socket. I put the new bulb in and the old sealing ring stuck to the new sealing ring making it twice as thick. THe harder I pushed the more firmly affixed it became. I pulled the bulb out and it looked fine - the TWO sealing rings mashed together and looked like ONE. I couldnt tell it was double thick, even.

After playing around I saw a tiny gap in the sealing ring and peeled the two apart.

Viola' - bulb fit right in.

Really silly issue.

You need the double jointed children's sized hands for that job. Right tool makes a difference!
Fwiw took me over 45mins first time. Have it down to 5 now*. Inc getting pliers to move the spring bulb holder.
*plus beer opening time.
