Will car shut off if camshaft position sensor is going bad?
I have a '93 Volvo 850 - that in the last few days has been stalling (at various speeds) and then won't restart. We've not had any initial starting problems - only after the stalling issue. It started out at 45mph when the CEL came on and the RPM's dropped. My teenager was driving at the time and pushed the accelerator to the floor, it recovered and ran fine. It did the same thing on the return trip about an hour later. No issues the following day with multiple stops, etc. Then yesterday 20 minutes into a trip the same thing happened however my pushing the accelerator did nothing and the car stalled and wouldn't restart for at least 20 minutes. It cranks but won't start. I pulled codes 314 & 324 on A6. Once it started, it ran fine to our destination, sat for a few more hours then started normal but stalled 5 minutes later. We ended up having it towed home (when it wouldn't restart after more than an hour) - where it started fine once removed from the truck (of course!). All that - and now my question - is the Camshaft Position Sensor really the issue? We're not having a problem starting until AFTER it has stalled and we replaced this part (FCP Groton) in February 2010. Would it be going bad already? thanks for any insight

The A-6 3-1-4 and 3-2-4 are indeed camshaft position sensor failure codes. Make sure the connections are clean from the CPS to its socket and also make sure that the wires from the CPS are dressed neatly away from any ignition wires.
Two years for a sensor is an unusually short time unless you bought a Scan Tech sensor. If it was an aftermarket part then you actually did quite well to get 2 years out of it.

Thanks Lee! I was confused with the code since we weren't having starting problems until after it stalled. Was double checking that it wasn't throwing some "false code" Lol! We finally got the old one off (bottom screwed was stripped by the mechanic who put it on) and it's a Bosch. We've bought a replacement & fingers crossed the stalling stops. Sadly, I bought the part through FCP Groton but had it shipped directly to my mechanic and nothing was registered for the warranty and I don't even have a receipt since it was all in the box
