flashing red arrow on 850

Post by mc4457 »

My son had some trouble with the 850 starting out in a higher gear. the red arrow started flashing so he took it to a tranny shop. They flushed and replaced the fluid and although the car runs great with all shifting being normal, the flashing arrow is still on and check engine stays on. can I find the code in the A module? and if nothing is wrong, can I clear the code and stop the arrow and engine light from coming on?

With engine off, but switch "on", foot on brake, 'Row' the shifter lever all the way through the gears many (20) times ...what you'll be trying to do is clean oxidation off the contacts on the PNP switch. It works sometimes...sometimes its not enough.
If that does not work, search "PNP", and see what is involved to remove and clean or replace it.

Indeed chances are that the problem is at its root the PNP switch. I have driven cars that get temperamental with the PNP for over a year. I don't drive in limp home mode but after "rowing" the shifter the transmission behavior goes back to normal.

It will gradually get worse and and worse. Changing the switch and aligning it really isn't that big of a deal, the hardest part is splitting the connector apart.

To get the arrow to stop flashing use port A-1 and read all of the codes. After you get through reading all of the codes clear the codes and it should come back with 1-1-1 and the flashing arrow will go away.

The transmission seems to work fine. I rowed the shifter several times but the light continues to flash. I have scoured the haynes manual for the pnp switch but can't find anything on it. Where is it? Is it under the shift cable on the tranny? I removed the battery tray and don't see anything resembling a switch where the cable attaches to the shift lever. thanks

It doesn't look like a switch in the normal sense. It's the item under the last part of the shift cable. It's a circular object with a large 22mm nut on top.

We had EXACTLY the same symptoms on our sedan and after cleaning and realigning the problem has never returned.

It's orange arrow.

Did you do what Lee adviced you to do( to read the codes & clear them and see if they will come back)?

Read them, clear them and if everything is ok,they will not come back.

Thanks a lot guys. I did try to clear codes, but it looks like I need to clean the EGR and realign and clean the PNP switch. After my last post I viewed the download on the pnp switch and the EGR. I really appreciate all of you help and this website.

Hi, I cleaned the pnp switch. I'm not sure I aligned it but when I reassembled it it seemed to only go back in one position with the selector in neutral. The rev and back up lights work as do all the forward gears, but the flashing light is still there. I need to clear it but which module do I use? is it the A-1 position or is it the B module? I get a 1-2-2 code on the B module but the haynes manual doesn't talk about the B module.
