VIDA "Operation Cycles" Counters

Post by packetfire »

Can anyone explain what VIDA means by "Operation Cycles" when it says something like:

Counter 1 32768 Started operation cycles since fault was last found.
Counter 3 33792 All operation cycles since the fault was found the first time.
Counter 4 32969 Confirmed operation cycles with active fault

This can't be "number of times the car was started", and it can't be "number of times VIDA checked the car" so is it "number of times that diagnostics ran internally"?

What meaning/value do these counts have in terms of diagnosing intermittent faults?
1982 240DL: Drove it 32 years and 1.5 million miles (sold, even still had mint leather!)
2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!

The operation cycles vary with the system. For powertrain it is an engine running ignition key on cycle. For some things with no relation to engine running it may be ignition in pos I or II counts. For a few things it is when the network comes alive at least partially. For the modules that have function for interior lights and key off accessories it can be a cycle count when any door is opened or remote unlocks the car.

So a low battery code for a period when the serpentine belt fell off would have highest counts in UEM, PSM, PDM, DDM, REM, CEM.
Lesser counts in DIM, CCM, SRS, AUD.
Least counts in ABS, TCM, ECM.
All of these for that one event when battery voltage went low when alternator quit charging.
