Passenger side CV boot is leaking grease, now driver side CV ball joint is grinding at acceleration and deceleration, both. It feels like driving on shoulder.
If replacement of axle is needed for '97 850 NA, where to look, who to ask, what not to install?
My list for front suspension keeps growing.
Would bad CV ball joint means replace axle?

I posted info on CV Boot here...
DIY: 1998 V70 Axle CV Rubber Boots Tips/Tricks
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=29716
This is why when a boot is cracked, replace the boot immediately, otherwise you end up with new axles.
Raxles use GKN/Lobro CV Joint, which is OEM.
Avoid Chinese made CV Joints on ebay.
For OUTER CV Joint Kit, GKN/Lobro sells these for Honda, VW, Saab but it is hard to find the GKN/Lobro OUTER CV Joint in N. America.
GKN/Lobro PN 302148 -----> Google this and you will see it is sold elsewhere in the world but not the US!
Another search word is "Spidan".
For example, this website from Poland sells this for US $40:

Google translate is helpful. They have parts not the complete axle. I am thinking...cn90 wrote:I posted info on CV Boot here...

Raxles charges about $180 for each axle.
Raxles probably ordered a whole bunch of GKN CV Joint Kits from Europe (see the link from Poland above).
The kit is about US $30-$40.
Raxles does good work and make nice profit for a relatively easy job!
If you can get your hand on the GKN kit (which is factory Volvo part), replacing it is easy, all you need is a Vise and Punch and hammer it out. I guess someone in forum can order the parts from Europe for US $30-$40/each and report back.
This kit is sold in Germany (where it comes from) Poland, Russia but not US (except for Raxles).
This one is 69 Euros, from Germany:

Of course not....you can only replace bad cv joint. The kit includes the new cv joint, boot, graphite grease and a razor blade to cut off your allready torn & damaged cv boot.
Usually, when cv ball joint fails it manifests like a fast clicking sound when you try to perform a u-turn or when you hit on the gas when wheels are fully locked. For example...if you have a clicking sound from the left...then your left cv ball joint is bad.
Grinding noise can also come out from a bad wheel hub(bearing).
The sound produced from a bad axle can be grinding but it's followed with a hard vibration and shaking from a front wheels.

I am starting to see through the cloud. Could I further isolate the the symptom since bearing is in the proximity?misha wrote: To reply on your Main subject of the post :Would bad CV ball joint means replace axle?

Misha, are you referring to the GKN kit that cn90 has recommended?
I would take it on, if I can get the GKN kit. Will I need two, one for each axle, since passenger side is leaking grease so migh as well?cn90 wrote:

xHeart,
- Your passenger side leaks a bit of grease, the CV Joint itself is probably fine.
- Your (L) CV joint is bad, replace only the CV Joint.
RE CV Kit. The ebay website in the USA lists mostly Chinese junks.
In order to get the OEM GKN kit, you need to do some research. Perhaps you will find it in German ebay website:
(http://www.ebay.de) or Polish website.
It still baffles me why Europeans can get their hands on the CV kit, while we in the USA cannot get it, except for Marty at Raxles.
Whatever you do, for pass side, use CV boot from GKN, not Rein.
Again, review the link I posted above.
PS: This UK website has a good selection of CV kit for about US $50 (£28.20) shipped worldwide.
Search their website using keyword "Volvo CV Kit".
You will need to email them and ask for:
- Exact kit you need
- Exact name of mfg (from the picture, it looks like it is the good stuff GKN).
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/gsfcarparts
---------
Example:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Outer-CV-Join ... 625wt_1196
---> This seems to match 1994-97 Volvo 850 and 1998 S/V70 models AT and with 125kW power:
