On 99-00 cars the cruise control is programmed to the cluster, so this must be a consideration.

Bearing this in mind I doubt swapping from a 98 will work if the car you're putting the cluster into has cruise.

Although the '98 and 99+ clusters are not electronically compatible the cases are the same and for the broken mount problem any good case can be used if you swap the guts.

Thanks for the replies, I learned something new.

Back to my issue of broken plastic tabs...my theory is that the P.O. (or the shop) replaced the light bulbs in the cluster.
In the process of doing that, one needs to remove the dash, however, there are 2 "secret screws" right above the cluster (you can see the screws just in front of the steering wheel pointing upward). If one fails to remove these 2 screws, when the dash comes out, the 2 black tabs will break.

Anyway, I zip tied it as mentioned, all is good.

I had those tabs broken before I bought the car. PO solved the problem by shoving a load of red shop rags in the dash to hold the cluster in place. Upon removing them, I discovered the cluster hopped around and made lots of noise.
I ended up removing the bezel from a cluster at the junkyard and swapping JUST the bezel to my cluster. Good as new. Just a few tabs and I think 2 T15s to remove it. That way I can keep my original cluster with original mileage.
Now I just wish I could program in the Info function without swapping the cluster...

I know this is an old thread, but I read it, tried it, and have a pretty definitive answer. I just tried swapping a 99 cluster into my 98 S70. It works for about 2 seconds, then the mileage disappears and the abs and brake light both illuminate. The trip info controlled by the dial (which is why I was swapping anyway) works but doesn't show any info besides temperature. This happens with both ABS modules that screw onto the cluster. Driving the car, I noticed the speedometer and tachometer don't work. Swapping back fixes all issues and lights completely.

Anyone with an extra 98 gauge cluster with trip computer and fuel consumption interested in selling please PM me lol.

Not matching shop rags to interior upholstery...the world just became a dark place...

He also had the driver's seat all taped up with red duct tape. He didn't even have the decency to use tan! For some reason he thought red matched.

Maybe he was colorblind. Have some respect for the handicapped, in christ's sake!

As a graphic designer I frequently check artwork for readability for green-red disabled and other colorblind variations. Sometimes it is hard to believe that design elements that have a really strong contrast to our eyes are barely visible for colour handicappped people
