volvo i pod cable on 2005 S60 with HU 650 stopped working

The I pod adapter cable (the older one, which only charges I pod classic, not the new ipods/iphones) on my 2005 S60 stopped working a week ago. This suspiciously happened two months after I got a power adapter for 12V->5V https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005OQ ... 03_s00_i01 for the car and used it to charge my Ipod and play music. not sure if the two are related, but that adapter doesn't hold in place very well and fell out/disconnected at times when I moved the ipod/looked at it's screen.

so the bottom line the connector will still be recognized on it's own (the I pod will have the message 'charging is not supported with this accessory') or with the power adapter (then it will charge), but won't play music. Surprisingly, I couldn't find a direct post anywhere through google on how to fix/address this issue. I called the Volvo dealership in Spokane, and they said I should bring the car in for the diagnostics (@$105) and for a software update (~$200). Knowing that the new part for the I pod connector (which would at this point charge the device) costs only $190 and is a plug and play installation, I was not thrilled about the idea. They never told me I could reset the computer and see if that fixes the issue first.

So I found a separate post on ehow.com how to reset the computer on the car and decided to try it and see if it works. All you have to do is turn the car off, wait for several minutes for computer/etc. to shut down after the key is pulled from ignition, and then disconnect the NEGATIVE on the battery inside the trunk, then reconnect it a minute or two later. This worked amazingly great, it reset the clock (to where you have to set the time), and the ipod connector started playing music again!

Hope this helps to those who experience a similar problem and don't have a friendly dealer who would suggest them to do this basic procedure before bringing the car in and wasting time/charging money.

Also, maybe someone knows what's the deal with doing software updates on the car, why would the dealer bring this up, and tell you that it costs $200 to do this? It sounds crazy. I also think, that when I brought the car to the dealership before (it was in the dfifferent location) during the times when it was still in 100k/6yr warranty, they updated the software for no charge.
