1998 Volvo s90 timing belt to short ?

Ok went to replace the tensioner pulled fan out aligned the crank and cams I got the hydraulic tensioner pined put the new tensioner on put the belt on how the book says and it wont go around the tensioner pulley seems like the belt is to short but its the same belt. Any tricks or something i'm missing ?

Hi Jesse,

You may have already done this, but did you put the old and new belt side by side and stretch with your fingers or something to compare the lengths?

Otherwise, I have only worked on a 940 B230 engine. However, on that engine you have to stretch the tensioner and spring and keep it stretched with a nail or screwdriver stuck in a hole in the block. Could that be the issue for you, needing to keep the tensioner stretched and out of tension?
