1997 850 won't start
When I turn they key, I hear a "whirring" sound but the starter isn't engaging. The battery is new. Do I need to rplace the starter or should I look elsewhere first?

Yeah, sounds like the solenoid that connects pushes the starter arm to the flywheel has gone kaput.

This is happening to me too on my 1998 V70 GLT. I assume that the starter and solenoid are one unit, yes? I have never changed one before.....

Yes, you are correct. One unit. Try giving the starter a couple healthy knocks with a hammer or something. This will sometimes free up a stuck bendix. As long as it is spinning fast enough it should kick out on its own. The other issue could be that it is spinning to slow to kick out. If that is the case start by checking the battery and all connections at the battery, grounds and starter connections. If they are all good then its possible the starter is just old and tired. Like I said though, if it's spinning plenty fast and not kicking out just hit it a few times, try to start it...repeat as needed.
I am not an expert mechanic, but I will attempt any repair. Worst case scenario is I screw it up worse than it was.
