2001 XC Tailgate Problem

The opener latch on the tailgate of my 2001 XC no longer works. I suspect that there is something wrong with the lock mechanism because it does not work when I unlock all the doors. Unlike my previous older Volvo wagons, this car has no emergency handle to open the tailgate. Any suggestions or guide pages as to how I might get it open, and/or take off the inside cover to see the mechanism? Many thanks
