CVVT issues after belt replacement

Post by 00wagonV70 »

Long story sort. 2000 V70 Wagon, 2.4L B5244S engine. Just replaced TB & tensioner/ idler even with my setup to keep things "tied down" the intake cam managed to jump out of time. Had someone else working with me who ended up rotating both cam pulleys. I lined up crank mark, cam marks, TDC on #1.... did it again to make sure everything lined up.. rotated the engine by hand several times by hand to make sure no valves were hitting.... enging turns.. but doesnt really "crank" and didnt even seem to want to fire. it may not be gatting spark from due to one of the cam/ crank sensors being off.. likely due to the fact that the position is not correct. the real question is, how to I get the bottom end of this engine in sync with the valvetrain. ive done this kind of work before, just not on 'these' types of cars. any rational advice is appreicated, and if I need to elaborate please specicy.

Before you pulled the original belt off did you go clockwise an additional 90 degrees then counterclockwise back 90?

i am afraid to ask if at this point i should get everything lined up an then go bak 90deg before i put everything back. theres got to be a way to get these thing lined up correctlyl fom this point. NO puleys came off and the CVVT hub was never adjusted. all timing marks lines up perfect before removal. Im not quite to the point of throwing my hands in the air, so maybe before I hit that point one of you volvo enthusiasts can lend me a hand!

The CVVT side sprocket floats on its mounting bolts. The procedure, which you can do now to correct the pre-load, is as follows:

Set the timing on the crankshaft and camshafts to the timing marks.

Continue clockwise an additional 90 degrees.

Rotate back 90 degrees counterclockwise to the marks.

Remove the timing belt from the camshaft sprockets and then re-install it, lining up the CVVT sprocket to the marks as the belt goes back on.

From there adjust the tensioner and you should be good to go. I normally run the engine for a few minutes and then touch up the tensioner to get the indicator in the window again.

That is for a turbo with the CVVT on the exhaust camshaft. The NA models have the CVVT on the intake camshaft but the procedure is the same.

to clarify... i am at the point where i am not sure what position the ex an int cams are at (other than the notched marking on the gear tooth) with relation to the crankshaft (double maked gear teeth to notches in block). I turned everything by hand to the positions inticated by marks, then advanced the cvvt cam 1/4 turn, and back to aligned mark. i then refit the tbelt, cranked by hand several rotations. the marks held, tension is ok.. still in a no start condition. hoping i can get this sorted soon
