whining noise in transmission

I have a whining noise in my 2005 s40 transmission. My mechanic had me listen with a stethoscope after he pinponted it. The noise seems to appear after the engine warms up. There is also a burning smell occansionally. Has anyone had asimilar issue and what was the result?
