I'm curious what range of temps other people see (if they have a way to measure)...
I've got a new 90c thermostat in the car. I typically see about 193f when driving, but the temps will creep up to 215 or higher when the car is idling for an extended period of time.
BTW, My temp gauge sits at 3 o'clock as long as the temp is between 150-220 (measured by my Scan Gauge).
Does anyone know what temp should kick the fan on?
Thanks,
Matt

Re: V70 - What is actual operating temp range? scan gauge us
I have an 850, slightly different.. but..
With Torque, fan kicks on as soon as ECT reads 103, stays on until it drops to 97, then ECT usually keeps dropping down to 95 or so. At idle on a warm day, this cycle will repeat itself every few minutes.
103c is 217f, so what you're seeing is probably about right -- around 217 your fan should kick on and drop your temp down to around 206.
And yes, the stock temp gauge is "compensated" and will read 3 o'clock over a fairly wide range.

ScanGauge II, temp is 175° when the needle is at 3 o'clock and stays there through 220°. Never got above that and the fan kicks on at 216° and goes back off at 206°.

Re: V70 - What is actual operating temp range? scan gauge us
My S70 98 according to the OBD2 scanner has a range about 165F-210F. While driving 165F (74c). The temperature gauge on the dashboard actually shows the difference. While in traffic or idling: around 216F (102c). It's about 51F (11c) degree difference. I have already replaced thermostat and sensor once (about 3 years ago). Back then the car was running really cold due to the thermostat being stuck. All parts OEM. Until recently the temperature gauge on the dashboard was always on 3pm. Interestingly the symptoms showed up after timing belt job. Water pump was replaced too btw. Unfortunately I had to outsource the job to the local shop, but I don't see them messing around with the thermostat housing??? At first I thought that the car needs to "burp" but 3 months later nothing changed. Coolant's level is ok. I have even replaced the coolant. What is the normal range of the temperature while driving and idling? Anyone checked with the OBD2 scanner?

As you can see from the other posters, 165 to 201 is a pretty normal range.

Re: V70 - What is actual operating temp range? scan gauge users?
ok. I decided finally to change thermostat and ECT sensor on My S70 98. I purchased OEM sensor (SWF VALEO 9186486) this time. Hopefully IT will last longer. The old one was by FAE 32370. It had its Ohm readings off. It is strange how such a simple sensor could go bad... Anyone can explain that? I used Calorstat by Vernet 87 C degree. I live in the South, so it's crazy hot over here... My OBDII readings at the ambient temperature 64-68F are: 192-202F while driving; while idling: 217-206F. The hand on gauge stays at 3pm all the time, does not move.

I documented the gauge positions with temperature in a thread last year.
The dash gauge should be thought of as a
Cold
Normal
Overheat
