I had heard a click, or crack actually when pulling out the old heater hoses from the coupling at the firewall.
As I was afraid of, I had broken the coupling and the bottom line simply pours out at the junction.

I have ordered a heater core, and the heater tubes with the junction at the firewall all scheduled to show up in a couple days.

I have to thank Steve, one of our moderators "abscate" for bringing a pair of OE Volvo heater hoses with him on a business trip to my area to assist in the expedition of my repair. I would not install the URO hoses I had received from FCP and sent them back.

New and Old. But both OE Volvo. Thanks again Steve! "abscate"

This was an accident waiting to happen.

Glad to have that taken care of.

Yay, almost. I will change out the junction, Tubes, and Heater core at the same time.

Junction and tubes.
Everything is all buttoned up but I can still pull the pipes out of the junction at the firewall.
The rest of the work will be on the inside with the new heater core and tubes.

All buttoned up but not done.

I received the parts Friday, installed on Sunday 9-14-14.
IMG_3476.JPG
new stuff.
The old heater core was not leaking at all, just brown inside.
IMG_3482.JPG
New an old.
IMG_3480.JPG
Old core, no leaks.
IMG_3483.JPG
I didn't have time to wash the new core, but it doesn't smell unbearably bad.
The Junction piece at the firewall is a puzzle to get around the gas pedal and cable on an 850, while getting it out from behind the A/C evaporator box.
IMG_3487.JPG
The crack can be seen in the sun lit area.
It was indeed cracked from when I removed the old hoses, hence the pouring leak. The black plastic is very brittle.

Glad to say it is all buttoned up and holding fluid.
IMG_3484.JPG
Done.
Now, everything has been replaced with regards to coolant plumbing. The steel pipe should be fine.

Took care of a corroding wheel sensor wire splice at the strut and shot the ABS wiring harness connector with electrical contact cleaner. Speedometer works again. For how long?

I also had come across a cracked inner CV boot while I was in there. I picked up a split boot for a quick fix, but it was not the exact fit, so I will be looking for the best remedy to that.

Rear brakes, rotors, e-brake shoes, pads. It was a scary mess back there.

This was not the original plan.

I had neglected to grease the bearings in my heater fan motor when I refurbished the brushes.

It was squealing only once in a while and then brought me a seized fan motor code.

No photos, but took the motor out, took the fan cage off to get both bearings. I ran it forward and reverse with my battery charger while shooting white lithium grease into the bearings. All places the bearings could be reached. With the motor bare that was about everywhere.

Rust actually started flowing out of the outer bearing while I continued short shots of white grease at full RPM.
The rpms became much higher and back to what I imagine would be normal again.

Back in with no code for the motor. Heat for the winter!

Also blacked out the grille. This is the third one now. The spare will go to the T-5R project as I will retire the sedans old hood and have an extra.

Yes, that was in another thread for the original, and most attentive way to keep the original chrome outline.
Bottom line. Try to sand all chrome flakes from between the veins. If you have the means, utilize air to blow the dust.
Tape the chrome outer edge.(if you wish to keep it).
Acetone on a paper towel will clean, and melt the surface to be painted. Wipe the paintable area lightly to remove dust, dirt and smooth imperfections of the plastic.

Acetone melts plastic. Be careful.

Black satin indoor/outdoor paint. One spray can in several coats should look good for years.

It was fun, I am refinishing the one I had done for the '93 two years ago for the T-5R.
Keep having fun.

I put on the winter wheels with Michelin snows I found on craigslist for a good deal.

This looks like the last week I would want to do much to the "fleet" without a garage.

The '93 Sedan worked well for the last two winters without snows. Last year we had a record total snowfall here in Michigan.

The '96 Wagon is this years winter driver. Everything seems to be working as it should.

Everything having to do with the coolant system is new.

I found the name of that wheel again. Lysithea.

I would have used the XC for the winter. It needs evap. work.

Columba wheels go to storage.

Until next year.
IMG_3546.JPG
I can live with that look for the winter.
After a short drive, the 15" wheels with new snows feel like a luxury ride compared to the slightly used 16" tires on the Columba wheels.

I also picked up a set of original '95 T-5R Titans in great shape that will likely go on the Wagon in the spring.
The 16" rims are a harsh ride as it is. I hope the tax goes through to repair Michigan roads or I may not enjoy the 17" Titans.

I found a set locally for a good price in very good shape for the Wagon maybe, or possibly The '93 Sedan after I do its 5-lug conversion.

In an earlier post in this thread, I had mentioned a 16T, as well as the R exhaust manifold.

I now seem to have a feeling to step up to the plate.

I had never expected to come across all the parts to do it.

This ECU may go to the new XC because it is from a '98 T5.

In my haste to bolt the new radiator in last year, I think I had neglected to change the O- rings to the Trans cooler lines. Although I had used new clips.
IMG_2891.JPG
Yeah. There.
Things were moving fast, garage time was limited.
Bottom line is, the lower connection now has a leak. Easy ten minute fix, I had the O-rings on hand, just didn't change them.
It is spring time. Ready for that mode.

Edit: Yes, the bottom Line is the bottom line.
I had a drain and fill planned anyway, so things will fall into place.
Oh, and the roads here in the Detroit 'Burbs, are still a disaster. I am leaving the 15" Snows on until I can feel safe that the dash will not completely fall from the firewall.

Sadly, I will have to do a recoat to the hood touch ups in front.

I knew the temperatures were all wrong, and I have chips from the winter.

Not a big deal. I've already done most of the hard parts.

I had not had three temperate days in a row that would agree to my project, so I knew it would never last.

It was cold and rainy, or 95 and beating sun.
I'm buying a building.
