MANUAL AC operation?

I have a 2001 V70 with the manual (not automatic) air conditioning controls....does anyone know the proper operation of these controls?
The original manual that came with the car doesn't even mention how to use it!
(it only covers the automatic climate control)

I am trying to troubleshoot the AC, but don't even know what position the center rotary knob should be in?

That center dial controls where the air is circulated to. Top is full defrost, 3 o'clock is defrost and floorboard/foot, 6 o'clock is floorboard/foot only, 8 o'clock is floorboard/foot and dash vents, 9 o'clock is auto, and 10 o'clock is dash vents only.

Yes that is the one.
10 o'clock dash vents only, that is good to know (w/o air working).
9 o'clock "auto"....what is that?

Any idea what all those dots between 12 o'clock & 6 o'clock are for?

And for some reason @ defrost (12 o'clock) the AC green light automatically comes on....is that normal?

Oh, sorry... I changed the image from a P1's HVAC cluster to a P2's cluster and didn't notice that the P2 unit doesn't have the AUTO setting, just full dash vents at 9 o'clock.

The dots between the icons just show other gradients between the settings. For instance, 6 o'clock is full floor, next around is mostly floor and some dash vent, next is equal floor and dash, next is mostly dash and some floor and 9 o'clock is full dash vent. Same kind of setup for the other unmarked dots elsewhere on the dial. AC *should* work with all the center dial settings. Set the dial and then turn on the AC if desired.

Defrost/defog should trigger the AC, yes, so the AC light should come on when that is selected.

Full AC to your face, set the dial to 10:00

OK, that sounds good then....I guess my cluster is working right if the AC comes on automatically in defrost.
Bear with me here, I don't usually use AC much in my cars....and this one doesn't work right (& nothing in the manual).
And I am not getting answers from my other post-

Well I tested positions yesterday, w/ the blower on full.
9 o'clock is all to the dash & rear seat post vents.
10 o'clock seems to be the same thing, but there is a distinct difference in air volume, and even the fan slows down?

Not sure that that could be?

Probably splitting the air volume between the dash/pillar vents and the upper registers by the windshield.
