Hi, so this really sucks but anyways. My Volvo S60 2.4 non turbo started shifting hard and loosing ATF about a month ago. I would usually just add a quart every time the ATF was low and the car pretty much drove fine thereafter.
I know that someone else posted a similar post in one of the Volvo websites but my situation is slightly different in this that my tranny was already giving problems before going into limp mode.
A few days ago while I was driving the car suddenly went into limp mode. When I turn the car back on it drives okay for a bit but then again it will go into limp mode. I This has happened several times now. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that either the shift solenoid needs to be change, or the tranny is complete toast and needs to be replaced. He also said that it can be that the radiator is not cooling the ATF properly so when it goes into the tranny it solenoid doesn't let it shift. I dont really know how exactly a auto tranny works so this is the best explanation I can give.
Please help!

There is only a 200ml (around 1/5 of a quart) difference between full and low on the dipstick.
If this trans has been repeatedly allowed to run low don't be holding your breath as it is probably damaged.

Define "loosing atf". Was it just leaking out or just "disappearing"? I hope you have been putting the correct tranny fluid in since the fluid level has been going down. Volvo fluid or Toyota 3309 (I think) would be the correct fluid. Any old atf would surely reduce the trannys life considerably. I would have to agree with the previous posters though either way. If you have been putting a quart in at a time, that is way below what the fluid level should be at. That happening a handful of times most likely fried the entire thing.
