1998/99 V70/S70 Transmission Swap

I have been putting this off for quite a while. This past winter my wife drove our 1999 V70 AWD for quite a while after a coolant line ruptured and destroyed the engine. A few weeks later the transmission in our 99 S70 AWD packed it in. Our local mechanic checked and was told that the transmissions would match up. Both are AW72 transmissions. The S70 is in better condition and we had the V70 motor swapped into the S70 . After the swap the arrow light remains on and the transmission shifting is very clunky. At first we thought the problem might be due to the speed sensor but we eliminated that possibility. The car has gone to another mechanic. After some research he had me bring in the ECM from the V70 hoping it would fit into the S70. It does not fit. After a bit more research he told us that we were basically out of luck. This bites.... Does anyone have any thoughts? Have them both towed away?

I will appreciate any thoughts!

Wait, your title says 1998/1999.

Which one's which year? Is the V70 a 98?

Sorry for the confusion.
The V70 AWD is the 98
The S70 AWD is the 99

Some additional information: After the swap there has been a speed sensor code. The mechanic lost the original S70 speed sensor and used the V70 sensor. Thinking that might be the problem he then purchased a S70 speed sensor from a junkyard. It did not help.
The symptoms are a hard clunking when shifting into reverse and a keklunk (as best I can describe it) noise when the transmission downshifts into first.

I have managed to confuse myself!
To clarify: The 1998 V70 AWD transmission swapped into the 1999 S70 AWD.

The S70 speed sensor (99) is what should do the trick - the computer interprets the signals differently.

Hopefully, precopster or jimmy57 who have done this swap before, can help you out with the details...I was just trying to get the details straight

The transmission is not AW72. They are AW50-42.

Solenoids are fine as the valve body part numbers are shared; I checked this on both FWD and AWD variants on Vida when researching this.

There are (2) speed sensors. One is at the back of the 'box & easy to find and the other is wired with the PNP and needs to be separated and fitted in the donor 'box.

Also the gearchange lever on the 'box has the "D" cut for the selector shaft cut at a different angle and must be swapped or your selector cable will look like it's too short. The newer '99 is black and earlier ones are zinc plated.

The trans cooler lines also mount differently. You could cut the lines and add metal tube to avoid loose fitting cooler lines.

You can swap transmission with a 98 and 99 model. i had to replace both speed sensor so the wire will hook up to it. Im about to do another transmision job from a 98 to 2000 soon and will post it next week on the swap
