960 Stereo Reinstall

My 960 came with a later model AM/FM CD unit, out of an 850 I believe. It was removed to run an aftermarket stereo. I'd like to put it back in to sell the car. After searching threads,I gather I need both the unit's serial number and original car's vin to get a security code. Is that correct? If so, am I simply out of luck since I have no way to identify the donor car?

Sometimes the security code is found hand written on the radio's label.
