1996 Volvo 850 Wagon automatic coasting in neutral?

Post by ketchup3821 »

Hello,

I have heard it can vary on transmission design whether it is damaging to coast in neutral (engine on) with an automatic. Does anyone know if the design of the one in the 850 lends itself to this or not? I know I could save a not-insignificant amount of gas doing this, but obviously that is not worth it if it causes an amazing amount of extra wear on my transmission. My car has 159K miles on it and I plan on driving it for years to come.

Thanks.
