2004 XC90 Driver side rear door glass replacement

Post by neworleans »

Hello friends,

My car's window got hit by a golf ball today while I was taking a walk at a park, now need to replace it, it is laminated, found a couple on ebay, one is non laminated, the other one doesn't specify. If I buy it online, is it easy to replace? Any DIY video or guidance available? Any help will be appreciated.
Any other online places that sell auto glass?

Thanks..

Here is the rear door panel removal. I've replaced and adjusted a few door glass but not on a XC90. On most vehicles it could and should be obvious once the door panel is off.

Thanks for your reply, after removing the panel, do I need to roll down the glass all the way or half way?
Is the glass held by bolts or rivets, do I need any special tool to remove the glass and also do I need to remove seals around the glass once it is disconnected from the regulator?

I apologize but I have not worked on that particular glass. The ones I've encountered have been bolts. I have never seen rivets. The glass may need to be rolled down so you can access the nut or whatever that is used to attach the glass to the motor mechanism.

Looks like bolts here. Let us know.

Thanks again, guess how much the dealer asks for a new laminated glass?
$$$600, labor not included, found one on ebay, will let you all know when installed.

Hello again,

I have a couple of more questions friends, I'd appreciate it for any input.
I found a non laminated glass and it is little bit thinner than the laminated one, would that be a problem when installed?
I was able to remove the panel, then rolled down the window half way, will need a long drill bit to drill out rivets, once I do that and ready to remove the glass, will I need to remove the small vent glass in order to remove the glass? Seems like the vent glass is screwed with one bolt only.

I called some people to install it for me but they ask 150 bucks for labor only. I think I can do this but need little bit info.

It's been awhile, not sure how you've gotten by but here is a schematic of the area. You could try and remove the quarter glass for potential ease of installation. However, you'll need to assess whether it actually would be helpful or even necessary.

As for the type of glass I always assumed only Windshield was Laminated and all others Safety Glass meaning it crumbles into small bits on impact?

Working on this job today. Per VADIS
Remove:
-the panel. Handle cover comes off, Two 25Torx screws.
-the loudspeakers. Remove rivets. Left one left in, pivot speaker out of way.
-the soundproofing
-the weatherstrip around the window
-the weatherstrip at the bottom of the inside of the window
-the 2 rivets where the window is connected to the lift mechanism.
Lift out the window.

Having much difficulty 'lifting out the window'

Fixed window has one screw under top of weather strip & one under foam circle. Once main window is out, fixed glass should slide out. Was hoping someone had some tips on removing the main glass as we cannot find a way to extract.

Follow Up success. We were able to slide the large window glass behind (to the inside) of the fixed glass and voila!
