97 Volvo 850 remote starter install?

Post by sdube »

Has anybody installed a remote starter on a 97 850? If so, what kit did you buy? Thanks

Not fitted one to an 850, but have 2 V70's with them fitted. I only use Viper products. Found them to be the most reliable up here in Calgary in Canada when the temp drops to -40C or below. Love the 2 way feedback and had forgotten to lock the car one day and it did it from about half a mile away no problem. These are great products, but here in Canada where we get limited choice of suppliers and fitters, you should be able to get a better price in US.

Only issue I have with Viper is the additional option info is hard to find to adjust setting like run-time, etc.

If you have a stick shift you do need extra parts to ensure car is in neutral before starting! Fortunately you don't have the proximity chip in your keys as that adds a lot to the price.

Had an Autostart version in car when purchased, but failed after a year (just out of warranty).

I do find it is important to have it fitted by someone who knows their stuff, as you need to make sure the start cycle is set correctly to ensure starter disengages quickly after engine fires.

Hope this starts dome discussion and you get more feedback.

Neil.

Thanks Neil. I have an automatic. Do you know if the Viper kit comes with installation instructions? I'm familiar with electrical wiring, etc. Or does it take an expert to install it?

I had a pro install it. There is a fairly thick manual that comes with it, but I recall there was a bunch of stuff that was only available to the installer/supplier. There is also some set up required. I also took a warranty so wanted it fitted professionally. I'm sure if you are comfortable with wiring stuff you could do it yourself. Go to Vipers web page and you can download the manual. I have a starter/alarm and a starter only. The combo is a Viper Responder LC3 Security/Starter (VIPER5704V2W) model. The dealer here supplies it with 2 rechargeable digital LCD fobs.

Above is the link to their website and they now have a newer model. Web page allows download of manual and an option to build the system for your car.

Hope this helps.

Have a look at AstroStart while you're researching.
Hands down the most popular brand in Fairbanks.

And if you're at all uncertain, find a good shop.
A GOOD shop. There are far too many hack outfits...
Any system is only as good as it's installation.
A healthy rep and Lifetime warranty are good signs.

Visions in Crowfoot. The guys are great. I know the manager there, but the install guys are good. Had a lot of stuff installed by them. Had a couple of glitches but they always find the issue which is generally not of their doing.

Had 2 systems fitted this year plus a back up camera, double din head unit into my 4Runner and wifes Kia.

Ask for Taylor or mention that I recommended them to you. Not sure that it will get you a discount, but it may help. My name is Neil Herdman.

Good luck.
