2000 V70 XC AWD Rear Differential Fluid change

Post by bobice » Sun Nov 10, 2013 2:49 pm

Hi,

My 2000 V70 XC AWD at 195,000 miles has some noise from rear differential for 4 years/30,000 miles now. My shop said it is bad and replacing would cost $1500 4 years ago, thus I didn't have it replaced. Since the car drives fine, and I would like to try to "fix" the noise from differential for better driving experience. Some members pointed out that loss of differential fluids could cause the noise, and maybe changing the fluid can also help. Anyway, is it true that the differential fluid shall be changed regularly?

I climbed down my car and checked the rear differential. It seems that there is one screw at the front of the rear differential on the driver side. I could not find any other plugs, is this screw the plug that I need to take it out to replace the fluid? If I to get a Volvo fluid, what's the part no.? Or what's the good alternative? I attached a picture here.

I also checked the post here, http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =9&t=30663
But it is for the 2nd generation v70. It looks very different from mine.

Thank you in advance!

Yes that is the fill plug. I am pretty sure you either use Volvo brand fluid its cost like $25 or GL-5 75w90 full synthetic. Searching on this forum will produce the answer but i am pretty sure that is what it takes. It should be in your owners manual also.

Thanks! I bought the Volvo rear differential oil from FCPeuro, mineral based for $19. Will try and see whether the fluid change will help.

After getting the Axle Oil (1161620) from FCPeuro and a multi-purpose pump from Harbofreighttools ($6 after coupon), I added 600 ml of oil to my rear differential. All old oil must have leaked. Will report back if the noise goes away a few miles later.

It must have a slow leak if it was low...did it resolve your issue?
