My 98 V70 GLt with 190,000 miles has been an awesome car. I am the original owner and had serviced by the dealer every 5000 miles up to 100k. Now, not so much. Anyways, car lately has been stalling out after running for a while, than will not start up right away (1 minute). Usually will start after turning over for 10 secs. Sometimes when starting it will not start right away. It seems like it is starving for fuel. It sounds like it wants to start but won't. Is my fuel pump going bad or, is there something clogged. Oh yeah, if I am running down the highway, it does not seem to have any problems, only when sitting at lights. Is there an inline fuel filter I can look at? Thanks for the help.

Just read on another post that their car was stalling due to a bad connection of the + battery terminal. Is this a common failure for stalling? Alternator works fine. However, I will check when I get home. I think it's fuel related though. Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like your fuel pump relay is going bad. They can become sensitive to high underhood temps (like when sitting).

Battery terminals aren't a common issue, but make sure they've got good contact.

Your upper fuse cover near the windshield has a couple Torx screws around it that let you take off the black cover around it. Under there, you'll find a relay marked '103'. If you can make your car act up, take out that relay and stick a jumper wire between 15 and 78. If that fires it back to life again, replace the relay.

Checked fuel relay. It is working fine. Investigated a little further, disconnected fuel line at rail and have plenty of fuel (turn key on, it starts pumping gas!). Can the rail be examined, clogged, cleaned? Or, is it most likely an injector? I pulled all the plugs off the injectors, inspected and re-attached. Still same result, starving for gas. What is the air fitting at end of rail? Is this where to test rail pressure? If I have good fuel coming to the rail, do I need to bother testing the pressure? Thanks for any help. Happy holidays!

Problem solved. It was the MAF. Disconnected and the car works like it should. From what I understand, the car might run rich with it disconnected but, no damage will be done to engine. Is this correct thinking? Thought I might drive to work tomorrow instead of truck. Ordering new Bosch MAF.

Thousands of miles, perhaps, to kill the cat, if that. The ECU defaults to a lookup table if it doesn't get a MAF signal which is reasonably close to correct mix. Drive the car carefully in a manner to maximize fuel economy and you will be fine until MAF comes. No drag racing, pulling horse trailers, jack-rabbit starts, just smooth and steady.
