2001 S80 Trunk Lid Bouncey Bouncey

The trunk lid on my S80 will not latch. I looked at the wires in the harness and they all looked ok. Can hear the micro switch in the trunk release clicking but get no noise or anything from the latch.
Picked up a used latch off a 2004 S80. Plugged the wire connector into the new one and heard the door locks make some kind of noise. Pushed the trunk release button and heard a familiar sounding noise coming from the latch. Installed the new latch and tried to close the lid, but it will not latch - keeps bouncing back up (just like with the old latch). The part # on old latch 8652398 an the newer one 9203514.
When I press the trunk release it makes noise but it seems nothing is happening to the actual latch.
Anybody got any ideas?

Further Investigation reveals the bracket on the 2004 latch provides a different angle on the latch tab. it actually misses the catch receptacle. Looks like I will have to transfer the new switch parts to the old bracket to make it work.

Ok, so the part I got off the 2004 has a different bracket on it, AND some internal parts were broken. By scavenging the bracket and good internal parts off of the original latch and using some of the parts off the replacement latch we were able to make a good latch that works.................
